What are the goals of this Teaching Kit?
The Teaching Kit and Calendar was developed for use in classrooms [K-12] of First Nations schools in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Kit will help teachers engage First Nations students in learning about the role of biodiversity, threats to species at risk, and the importance of healthy habitats. Students and teachers can explore means of protecting and recovering species at risk and habitat within First Nations territories,using tools such as First Nation’s own natural laws and the Species at Risk Act [SARA]. The kit was designed to be relevant to todays First Nations with attention to language, interactive exercises and examples of communities that are actively involved in protecting species at risk.

The Images and Objects Toolkit is for facilitators and teachers interested in Education for Sustainable Development.
It provides the context for the development of the toolkit which includes:
• the background to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
• an overview of suitable Education for Sustainable Development methodologies.
Step by step instructions for planning and implementing Education for Sustainable Development activities, using images and objects, are included together with a starter kit of sample images.

School planning is identifying a set of specific goals in priority areas to work towards for the year.  The goals set out in a school’s year plan do not negate work, which is continuing in other areas. The point of the school plan is to help everyone in the school community focus on developing excellence in specific areas or addressing specific challenges by concentrating energy and resources.

The MFNERC science specialists have developed a First Nations’ Astronomy workshop intended for students and teachers. This workshop contains three components. The first is a Power Point presentation introducing students to the night sky from First Nations’ perspective.
