This unit consists of a staff of Special Education Specialists, a Community Wellness Specialist, a Speech and Language Pathologist, a Special Education Instructor and a Program Liason Officer. The goal of the SEU is to assist in building foundations for the development of Resource/ Special Education Programs using best practices and reflecting the unique needs and values of First Nations communities in Manitoba. Currently, the SEU has three training programs; Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) training program, Para Educator Rehabilitation Assistant (PERA) program, and the Resource Inclusive Special Education (RISE) Teacher training program (RISE). Both the RISE and PERA training programs will be available via Web CT. The participants in these programs are First Nations individuals working in Manitoba First Nations communities. The only full time training program is the SLP. The RISE and PERA programs are designed to train and support the participants working in classrooms so that they are able to immediately implement their training.
FASD - A Resource for Manitoba First Nations Schools
This resource is divided into six sections including “Russ Hilsher’s Story”, a 10-minute video about Russ’ life story of living with FASD.  The second section includes an interactive exercise with Russ about what supports and accommodations enable his success.  The third section highlights strategies for success that can be used in school, at home and in the community.  This resource also includes a series of questions that are meant to stimulate conversation for community-based initiatives to address FASD..

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach that addresses and redresses the primary barrier to making expert learners of all students: inflexible, one-size-fits-all curricula that raise unintentional barriers to learning. Learners with disabilities are most vulnerable to such barriers, but many students without disabilities also find that curricula are poorly designed to meet their learning needs.
